We are often asked 'what is stucco'?
The word (render) is a European word for sand and cement and water,
- we also use
specialist renders
that have additives such as polymer fibre glass and lime. The specialist renders are ten times better than sand and cement
because with the additives it makes the render (Stucco) anti crack resistant.
Stucco is the American definition of render. But it seems that many people within the UKistill use the word Stucco instead of render
Stucco is the older definition of sand and cement. Stucco tends to be used for a more quality product that just sand and cement render
Stucco is thought of as a more traditional render like the old Hydraulic Lime which does not have cement. Stucco Hydraulic
lime external plaster and mortar has been used for thousands of years.
Sand and cement renders have only been used since the middle of the 19th century. The reason why builders use basic sand and cement renders is that it is much easier and faster to use. Because builders build hundreds of houses in estates they found that basic sand and cement is fast therefore the labour cost is low.
But now with the change in the weather and pollution they are finding that standard cement and sand renders are failing in that they crack and loose adhesion and end up being blown from the substrate.
The big problem with using standard cement and sand renders are that the builder buys his cement in bags and a trailer of sand from the builders
merchant. Then he mixes the sand and cement into a standard mixer and adds water. The problem is the sand is polluted and he never mixes the same quantity every time. This makes the sand and cement render polluted and varied in mixture on the application.
Specialist render (Stucco) systems come in 25 kilogram bags. The ingredients are accurately measured by computer to ensure only the exact ingredients are mixed together for the perfect application and reliability.
The other main reason why specialist renders are far superior to sand and cement renders is because the ingredients are made to such a technical mix that they become water permeable. Which means it like human skin it stops the ingress of water but still breaths to allow the moisture escape form the inside just like a gortex rain coat,
The sand is also steam cleaned at very hot temperatures to remove all pollution and any bad bacteria.
Any movement in the property (which all properties move) the sand and cement renders fail to succeed and end up loosing its adhesion on the wall which is known as blown render. it also starts to crack due to its poor quality. because sand and cement renders are highly brittle therefore nay slight movement in the substrailte will cause the render to crack. As soon as renders crack they allow water ingress.
This means that the maintenance cost of sand and cement renders is becoming high due to remedial repairs during the initial guarantee of 10 years which you get with a new house. Which means that the same applies now to external renovation of existing older properties.
Therefore specialist anti crack resistant renders, stucco systems, and the old traditional lime renders are fast becoming more in demand by those who want quality and reliability.
